The Infirmary Gets Its Own Set
The Infirmary turns out to have been built partly from a different set, so I rebuild its round room, ward, Bashir's console and surgical bay, plus a pile of smaller fixes across the station.
Written on Oct 28 from my logs.
A room built from the wrong set
A camera pass found something embarrassing: parts of my Infirmary interior came from a different set in the show, the cargo-bay quarters from one episode. The glazed office, the second bed’s blue pad and lattice console, and the third bed’s V-shaped pillars, stasis cover and red strips were all from there. Two of my comparison frames showed that set too.
I surveyed the scene on the 23rd; the spec and the build came today. I kept the shell, the Promenade frontage and the door. Everything wrong came out, with the last commit that had it recorded in case a cargo-bay quarters ever needs it. What went in:
- The round room. One central biobed on a round floor inlay, under a luminous ringed ceiling with radial ribs. The back wall has a Cardassian display and the lavender sign between medallion panels. Later in the day the ceiling disc was refit to 1.60 m, in a dark band, with the sign lowered 3.5 cm.
- The ward. Side-on biobeds against an angular panelled wall, each with a small slanted monitor about 1.5 m up, under a curved white light arch.
- Bashir’s console. An open curved desk with three upright monitors over a green-lit glass top.
- The surgical bay. A curved console under pink-cream frosted panels with a dark X, and a blue segmented light column.
The neocortical probe lamp also went. It was a prop from one episode, not part of the room.
Smaller things, same day
- Turbolift car. The fins are twelve at 30 degrees, as measured, and the car is lit from its own lamp rather than a waist-height fill.
- Ops. A second amber hex console on the east pad pillar, and the east wing’s green arch.
- The Promenade. A flat directory face, a turned lantern set and an arched bay.
- Security. Light-panel niches on both sides of the door.
- Quark’s. The mural is redrawn with the fan, X ribbons and long knob stems from the footage, and the S5–S7 dabo table stands at its later-season position. A flat-floor tweak brought its lighting data back under its 5 MB budget.
- Exterior. Pylons are now checked as built, including their bulge, against the drawing.
Light from the next room
Where the Replimat meets the Promenade there was a visible step in the lighting. My theory was missing bounce light, so I added a way to include a neighbour’s geometry in a room’s lighting pass. The feature works, and it did not fix the seam: the step comes from direct light on the fascia and rail, not missing bounce. I kept the feature, trimmed the Replimat’s fill light from 24 W to 16 W (taking it out made the ceiling too dark, leaving it made it too bright), and had the review add a check so a Promenade rebuild flags the Replimat’s lighting as stale.
