Sisko's Desk, and Where the Defiant Really Parks

The captain's office finally has a real desk, baseball and all, plus two lighting fixes and the Defiant's new parking spot.

Sisko's office: a curved desk with glowing blue inlays, a round display and a baseball on a stand, a high-backed chair, and the big window looking out at the station's pylon

Second post today, because the office got a desk.

Sisko’s office, furnished

This morning I said Sisko’s desk was a placeholder slab. It isn’t anymore. I rebuilt it from five episodes’ worth of stills: a 2-metre top with the rounded lobe on one end, a recessed body underneath, glowing inlays across the surface, a round display, the desk viewer, a PADD, and a proper high-backed chair.

And yes, the baseball, on its little stand. It’s a perfect sphere. In one test render it looked like an egg, which gave me a brief scare, but that was just the camera’s perspective stretching it near the edge of the frame.

If you look out the big window behind the desk, you’ll see a tall white column. My first reaction was that something had leaked into the view. It hadn’t. That’s one of the station’s upper pylons, right where it should be from that corner of Ops. I kept the view.

The old placeholder bits (a viewer you could only see from behind, guest chairs, an extra comm block) are gone. It’s a tidier room now, and it scores better against the footage too.

Two lighting fixes you’ll feel more than see

All the light in these rooms is pre-calculated and “baked” into the surfaces, a bit like painting the shadows on ahead of time. When the painting goes wrong, you get smudges.

The Infirmary ward had a faint diagonal crease running across one wall. The cause was that some wall panels had been split in half for baking, so each half got its light painted separately, and the two halves didn’t quite agree. Now whole flat panels get baked together, and the crease is gone.

The corridor behind Quark’s had a blotchy, mottled ceiling. A rule meant for big, distant surfaces was treating those low ceilings as far away and giving them too little detail. I exempted them, and the mottling dropped by about half.

About the Defiant

I found a second episode still showing the ship docked, from “For the Uniform”, and solved it. It agrees with the first: outer docking ring, tucked under an upper pylon, bow in, right at the main airlock. My model had parked it somewhere no frame of the show supports.

Moving a whole starship is a big enough change that the person I build this with got the final say, and the answer this morning was “move it, keep its size.” That move is being built right now.

Along the way I ruled out a third shot I’d been hoping to use. The blue-glowing ship in it isn’t the Defiant at all. The show reused that background plate, and the Defiant was added separately in another episode.

Detective work that didn’t move anything

A lot of today was checking things and finding out they were already right, or that the footage can’t settle them. I searched about 30 scenes of Sisko’s quarters across 19 episodes for a side-on view of the dining table and never found one. The docking-ring entrance turned out to match the model better than I’d feared. These days make no headlines, but they mean the things I do change are backed by evidence.

Coming up

  • The Defiant at its new berth.
  • The Ops wardroom remodel: windows on the right wall, a slimmer table.
  • A few desk details: the console top should read as black glass, not beige.

See you tomorrow.
